How The Collective Power Of Women Busted The Boom

tribe-beats-back-fracking-women-of-green

Water is sacred to the Turtle Mountain Tribe among many other. Water, more than anything, explains why members of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians acted so quickly when they learned their region was next in line for fracking. Within just a few weeks of tribal women meeting on the topic in late 2011, the council banned fracking on the 77,000-acre reservation. They now are developing alternative energy with a Department of Energy grant.

Celtic New Year, Chinese Dragons, and Our Cross-Cultural Traditions

Today is Imbolc, the first day of Spring, one of the four Celtic seasonal holidays that fall on the calendar mid-points between the equinoxes and solstices. Like most Pagans, I honor Brigid, the Goddess associated with: the water of holy wells, the hearth fire, the fertile earth of Spring and mental air energy needed to create poetry. She also offers needed protection. But what does Brigid have to do with the Chinese Dragon? To answer this question, first keep in mind this Asian mythological character is benevolent, protective, and inspiring— quite the opposite of the Western Dragon. In China and around the world where Chinese have settled, the Dragon’s appearance is the highlight of community gatherings. Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for Chinese worldwide. It falls on the new moon between January 21st and February 20th. This year Chinese New Year is February 8. On the West Coast of the United States where I live, the Chinese Dragon plays a prominent public role, and not just for the Chinese community. Parades and diverse events draw massive crowds of varied lineages. During this festival season, which lasts from the New Moon to the Full Moon, a spectacular 268-foot […]

How To Cut Through The Local Clutter

Cut Through Clutter with Carolyn Parrs

One of the biggest challenges for small, local businesses is getting noticed. The truth is that local businesses have unique advantages over the big boxers, and if they are strategic about it, they can carve out a sweet piece of the market pie. The Good News In recent years, there has been a huge resurgence in customers wanting to shop local and support the community. Emarketer recently reported the following: U.S. consumers are choosing small businesses because of the personalized experiences they provide compared with larger businesses. According to April 2014 data from AYTM Market Research, personal service was the Number 2 reason U.S. internet users preferred small businesses vs. large companies, cited by 52.7%. This trailed supporting the local economy (56.2%). What’s more, prices did not play a huge role in choosing small businesses. In fact, 61.2% of respondents said they would pay higher prices to support small businesses. The truth is people are rooting for you to succeed! Here are 3 ways to help make that happen. Don’t Put the Cart Before the Horse One of the biggest and most expensive mistakes I see with small, local businesses is putting the cart (creating a website or ad campaign) […]

This Was A Turning Point For Me

Carolyn Parrs, Founder of Women Of Green. ©2015 Jennifer Esperanza

We all have turning points in our lives. People we meet. Stories we hear. Experiences that mold our life purpose. I’d like to share one of mine with you. It’s about a young mother named Liberty. At the age of 24 she gave birth to her second child, a beautiful, nine-pound baby boy she named Indigo. When he was just three weeks old, significant green mucus started forming in Indigo’s mouth. Liberty took him to the doctor and thinking it was thrush, he prescribed antibiotics. One week. Two weeks. Three weeks. Nothing changed. After seeing more and more doctors who prescribed more and more antibiotics, still nothing changed. Liberty was lost. Five months later, Indigo developed a hole in his tongue “the size of a quarter,” says Liberty. “Red, open flesh that made it impossible for him to nurse or to eat in general. I had to force feed him with an eyedropper every hour and a half with the breast milk I was pumping every two hours.” Can you imagine? While in and out of emergency rooms for months on end, Indigo’s condition worsened. Eventually, Liberty found a medical specialist that treated environmental conditions. After extensive testing, Indigo was […]

Liam Neeson gives voice to Ice in Nature Is Speaking Series

Nature Is Speaking Video Series

Last year, Conservation International started a campaign called Nature Is Speaking, to give voice to our natural world. The video campaign uses a star-studded cast of award-winning actors, with Harrison Ford as the Ocean, Robert Redford as the Redwoods, Julia Roberts as Mother Nature, and Kevin Spacey as the Rainforest. These videos offer simple but powerful messages with one bottom line: nature doesn’t need people, but people need nature. The latest video in the series features Liam Neeson as the dramatic voice of ice, with a dire message about climate change and how melting ice is having devastating effects on humans. While melting ice contributes to sea level rise, frozen ice helps deflect sunlight. So, as ice disappears, the darker surface of the sea absorbs the sun’s energy, further warming the ocean, and creating a feedback loop. This isn’t Liam Neeson’s first time lending his voice to environmental causes. The actor was also a part of HBO’s Saving My Tomorrow, a documentary about kids working to help the environment. According to Conservation International, the film was intentionally released just a few weeks before the international climate change meeting in Paris, and the organization will be showing the films during the […]

The Most Amazing Fact!

The Most Astounding Fact - Orion Nebula

This month we had a most amazing moon didn’t we? A Super Moon combined with a Lunar Eclipse. When I actually take time out of my busy life to stop, breathe, and look up in the night sky, I am always in awe. I feel small and big at the same time. Small compared to the vast universe we live in — like a speck of consciousness in grand scheme of things. Yet, inside that speck of me, is the entire universe. Literally. It’s mind blowing when you think about it. Now if you really believed that…that you have within you the same stuff stars are made of, and if you found a way to tap into that light…that greatness, then what can you not accomplish? I mean really? This, to me, is the most amazing fact. So grab a cup of tea, and watch this three and a half minute video by Neil deGrasse Tyson. It will help you connect to the truth of you. And if you need a little help in realizing that, I invite you to check out my Women As Game Changers Coaching that is designed to call forth women in powerful ways to awaken […]
